“Why didn’t you tell me?” she gasped.
“To surprise you,” he said, lifting her off her feet. They embraced, neither letting go. They spoke into each other’s warmth.
“You nearly gave me a heart attack! It’s so early…”
“Last night I got a message saying not to come in. A little vacation with pay.”
“You could’ve called, prepared me.”
“And miss the look on your face?”
“I comb my hair, wear better jeans when I wait for your train.”
“You’re beautiful now.” He inhaled her scent. “Wish I could find work here…”
“Someday,” she whispered.
“Let’s figure this out tonight,” he said. “It’s time and I have a new plan. We can discuss it over dinner. Okay?”
She looked into his eyes. “You know it’s okay. I’m even ready to give up one of our jobs. I want to live with my husband. The economy be damned. Fear be damned.”
He smiled, knowing something he couldn’t quite put into words.
